Coming from a holistic framework is essential in my work as a Yoga therapist. I have clear memories of when I first started Yoga and benefited from the practice. I would feel that I needed to cope with challenging feelings in my body and almost felt like I was failing if I could not regulate myself. I remember an integrative Doctor said to me when I was struggling with my anxiety symptoms, "why don't you practice mindfulness meditation for five minutes longer". I felt deflated that all the work I was putting in seemed to not get me in the regulated state that I needed to be able to function well. This Doctor was holistic and didn't consider the complexity of mental disorders. As a Yoga therapist, I am holistic and value the work from many fields of health. Choosing one path that works for you doesn't mean it will work for another. Value the work in all areas of health.
